Rose Davey: Drawings

19 November - 21 December 2020

All drawings are works in themselves and are never translated into paintings. They offer an alternative arena of aesthetic exercise. The activity of making is frenzied, spontaneous and unquestioned. Most outcomes are rejected and another sheet of paper is drawn until the energy runs out.

ROSE DAVEY – THE DRAWINGS

November 2020

These drawings have been selected from hundreds of others which remain piled in the studio; the gaps between the ‘good’ ones.

Drawings often repeat the motif of the rectangle present in the paintings. Objects or landscapes are also used to express space, scale and relationships of colour, and some works are a more direct response to political and global events.

The combination of pure pigment pastel; smooth upon flimsy newsprint and attached onto pristine white paper by coloured masking tape is a medium developed over time. Its effect satisfies the eye and hand of the artist, whereas other material collaborations disappoint.
